Afghanistan RAWA, the Revolutionary Association of the Women of Afghanistan, was established in Kabul, Afghanistan, in 1977 by a group of Afghan woman intellectuals. It is an independent political/social organization of Afghan women fighting for human rights and social justice and for the creation of a democratic and secular Afghanistan. This is their statement in response to the September 11 attacks and the apparent plans by the Bush administration for a military attack on Afghanistan.

Asia The Korean Federation for Environmental Movement (KFEM)and the Pacific Asia Resource Center (PARC) have launched an initiatve for Asia NGOs based on this joint statement. The Society for Social Studies of Science (4s) has issued the following statement. Please disseminate as widely as possible.
International Youth Declaration

The International Youth Declaration (www.9-11peace.org/youth.php3) will be publicized and sent to President Bush and other world leaders as a show of youth support for nonviolence.

Forwarded by the International Youth Co-operation (www.iyoco.org). IYOCO is not the only one in this effort. Hundreds of youth organizations worldwide have signed on; it is therefore a declaration by a growing coalition of youth organizations and individuals.

Japan: JALISA Founded in April 1957, JALISA became a member of International Association of Democratic Lawyers (IADL) to engage in international solidarity activities as one of leading organizations of democratic lawyers in Japan. The Association has also endeavored to establish friendly relations with democratic lawyers of many countries. As lawyers of Japan, the only A-bombed country in the world, it has also pursued efforts for the elimination of nuclear weapons. Recognizing the perilous situations in the world today, i.e. the continued presence of nuclear weapons and military blocks in spite of the end of the cold war, and the pursuance of profits by giant capitalists etc., threatening the people's existence worthy of human dignity on a global scale, and being caused by the policy of the governments concerned, the Association deems it its grave mission to eradicate such threats and injustice.

Nobel Peace Prize Laureates

In response to the tragic events in New York and Washington, DC, eight Nobel Peace Laureates have taken the rare step of issuing a common statement in which they express their profound commiseration with the family and friends of the victims and appeal to the government of the United States to refrain from military action in retaliation. They emphasize that existing standards of international law must be employed in bringing those responsible for these barbaric acts to justice.

Nobel Peace Prize Laureates' Petition Join the Nobel Peace Prize Laureates in signing on to a statement (hosted by the AFSC), that will be publicized at the 2001 Nobel ceremonies in Oslo--but only if enough people sign on soon enough!

Pakistan The following statement was released by the Citizen's Peace Coalition, Labour Alliance and other Pakistani civil society groups on the occasion of a conference organized by the World Bank, Asian Development Bank, and United Nations Development Program on Afghanistan's reconstruction in late November.
South Korea People's Solidarity for Participatory Democracy, founded in 1994, is a civil organization dedicated to promote justice and human rights in Korean society through participation of the people. It serves as a watchdog against abuses of power and provides alternatives.
The Netherlands The Civil Coalition (www.civilcoalition.nl) is a coalition of several Dutch-based NGOs, calling for a unified response through the rule of law.
The Philippines Akbayan is a progressive political party based in the Philippines.
Uganda Anti-War Message from the Kaabong Women's Group of Uganda
United Kingdom Fourteen leading British charities and aid organizations called for the United States and its allies to show restraint in responding to the terrorist attacks. They urge the U.S. and its allies to assess carefully the potential impact any proposed military action might have on "the poor, the innocent and the voiceless." It is imperative, they say, "that hatred does not become the order of the day."
War Resisters' International A group of pacifists based in England. This website has a petition for "conscientious objection to war and war preparations."

Women Living under Muslim Laws Women Living Under Muslim Laws (wluml.org) is an international Network that provides information, solidarity and support for all women whose lives are shaped, conditioned or governed by laws and customs said to derive from Islam. The Network aims to increase the autonomy of women by supporting the local struggles of women from within Muslim countries and communities and linking them with feminist and progressive groups at large; facilitating interaction, exchanges and contacts and providing information as well as a channel of communication.
