ATTACKS ON AMERICA:
THE WORLDWIDE FACE OF TERROR
Terrorist attacks against the United States on September 11 shocked
the world. The U.S. Committee for Refugees (USCR) extends its
deepest sympathies to the thousands of victims and their families.
The tragic events of September 11 are an awful reminder that
massive death and utter terror are a sad daily reality in too
many places of the world. We at USCR are painfully aware in our
daily work that tens of millions of innocent people around the
globe are regularly victimized by atrocities, human rights abuses,
and the destruction of all that life holds dear. The 34 million
people worldwide who struggle to live day to day as refugees and
displaced people are the survivors of bloodshed and hate that
still afflict humankind in the 21st Century. Hundreds of thousands
of asylum seekers have fled to the United States over the years
to escape merciless acts of violence and persecution that have
terrorized their homes. They have endured the kind of loss that
Americans have rarely experienced, until now.
As the U.S. government strikes back at the perpetrators and
supporters of terrorist attacks, the American public should recognize
that all American citizens now have a deeper bond with refugees
and asylum seekers of the world because they, too, know the face
of terror.
