Whether or not any of us agree about each particular decision made to prevent public access to sensitive information, it is the Electronic Frontier Foundation's responsibility to chart any such efforts so that we as a society are at least aware of what is no longer available to us. This page attempts to convey the chilling effect that responses to the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001, have had on information availability on the Internet as well as some sense of the effect on people trying to provide this information. |

| STUDENT CONFERENCE 16-18 February 2002 |
BERKELEY, CA NATIONAL STUDENT CONFERENCE OF THE PALESTINIAN SOLIDARITY MOVEMENT Hosted by Students for Justice in Palestine, UC Berkeley justiceinpalestine@yahoo.com (510) 496-1269 x1948 In the wake of the all-out war now being waged on Palestine, it is more imperative than before that we in the United States coordinate our efforts to work for justice and human rights for the Palestinian people. Just as students in the United States played a key role in working for an end to South African apartheid in the 1980s, so we are now taking on the role of spearheading the movement against Israeli apartheid today. For this reason, Students for Justice in Palestine is coordinating a conference of campus-based activists. This conference is primarily aimed at student activists, but the educational sessions will be open to the public. We would like this to be a hands-on conference that allows us to share our experience as activists and participate in organizing a national movement. Registration fees will be $20 student--in advance; $25 student--at the door; $45 non-student. |

| NATIONAL STUDENT ANTIWAR CONFERENCE 22-24 February 2002 |
NEW YORK, NY NATIONAL STUDENT ANTIWAR CONFERENCE AT COLUMBIA UNIVERSITY Anti-war activists from schools across America (and hopefully the world!) will gather to hold a conference to discuss their common aims and obstacles and to plan joint actions against this unjust and brutal war on terrorism. In mid-November over 1,200 campus activists gathered for regional conferences and meetings in Chicago, Boston, Washington DC, North Carolina, and California. We hope to build on this great start and to strengthen the networks of student anti-war activists that are already forming. Register your school's representatives for the planning call and check out all planning that has happened so far at www.antiwarconference.org. Join the online brainstorming that is going on now by joining the listserv. Just send a blank email to lists signup. The time, access codes, and agenda for the planning call will be sent to registered participants as soon as possible. Feel free to forward this message to all campus or school-based anti-war groups who might be interested. Please direct questions to Kirstin at kirstinl68@hotmail.com or to Ryan at ryan_wadsworth@hotmail.com. For more information about the national conference, please visit www.antiwarconference.org. | NATIONAL ANTI-WAR CONFERENCE 1-3 March 2002 |
MONTREAL, CANADA CONCORDIA STUDENT UNION TO ORGANIZE MASSIVE NATIONAL ANTI-WAR CONFERENCE The anti-war efforts of dissidents in North America must be intensified. There is a pressing need for the education of the general public and organizing of established organizations to stop the war. Under the direction of its members, the Concordia Student Union is providing a forum for activists and organizations around the country. With a $20 000 budget from the CSU, plus whatever other monies, the conference shall have a two-fold aim--to inform and educate the public about the war, and to provide an organizational forum for activists across the Canadian state to come together and come up with a plan of action against the war. There will be a sliding scale registration fee for groups and individuals, and we will be fundraising from various organizations and groups (and specifically trade unions) to increase the budget of the conference. (So if you or your organization can help us out with this matter, please get in touch!) The conference will be organized around three central themes: "The war against 'Terrorism,' Imperialism and the military industrial complex," the "War at Home: anti-terrorism legislation, the loss of civil liberties, and the crack down on immigration," and plenary sessions entitled "Organizing against the War." Friday and portions of Saturday will be dedicated to educational presentations and discussions for the general public. The other portion of Saturday and all day on Sunday will be based on coming up with an action plan and an organizational framework to building a broader anti-war movement within the Canadian state. To get involved with the Conference, as a delegate, fundraiser, speaker, or organizer, you can leave a message for the anti-war committee at the CSU office at 514-848-7474 or you can email csu@csu.tao.ca. You can also talk to Samer from the committee at 514-262-4564. |

| MARCH 27 April 2002 |
WASHINGTON, DC MARCH AGAINST WAR & RACISM! (preceded by a week of mass actions) Tell President Bush: WE DEMAND MONEY FOR JOBS AND EDUCATION NOT WAR! STOP THE RACIST ATTACKS! DEFEND CIVIL LIBERTIES AND CIVIL RIGHTS! Record layoffs continue and the U.S. government's response is billions of dollars in bailouts to corporations and insurance companies while cuts in social programs continue. The immediate response of the Bush administration after September 11 was a $15 billion package for major airlines, while they have refused to increase unemployment insurance for 100,000 travel industry employees and 400,000 workers in other sectors who lost their jobs. The Bush-proposed $100 billion "economic stimulus package" that is under consideration would not only repeal the corporate minimum tax, but would refund to the big U.S. corporations fourteen years of taxes, and would provide more permanent tax cuts for the wealthiest individuals. As the war abroad threatens to expand, the war at home against Arab, Muslim, South Asian, and all working people continues. So-called "anti-terrorism" legislation has legitimized and legalized racial profiling. Bush and Ashcroft are reorganizing federal law enforcement into a domestic surveillance police state that gives the government license to listen to the public's phone calls, read the public's email, execute covert searches, and target political and religious groups. *The April 27 national march on Washington against racism and war will be the conclusion of a week of mass actions. We call on people to join the National Colombia Mobilization April 19-22 (http://www.soaw.org/colombiaMobilization.html).* International A.N.S.W.E.R. Act Now to Stop War & End Racism - is a coalition that was formed in response to the headlong rush to war and racist attacks following the horrific events of September 11. A.N.S.W.E.R. has the support participation of more than 500 organizations and prominent individuals and has scores of organizing centers across the U.S. and around the world.
