Students here have held walk-outs, joined other mass demonstrations in Hollywood and surrounding areas, teach-ins, and discussion on the war with Iraq. As far as anyone is aware, such events are relatively unprecedented at Occidental, and we have been pleasantly surprised by the level of support that the school administration has provided - even Ted Mitchell, the school president, has stated his support, and the politics and international relations departments have responded by announcing discussion forums to follow up on the teach-in and rally.

Given the trauma that visited Hawaii's economy during and following the first Gulf War in 1991, this issue has special resonance to residents of Oahu, providing additional impetus to join this drive for deliberateness and reason. So far, 162 cities in the U.S. have convinced their City Councils to pass resolutions against the war, and dozens of other cities are working on it (check www.citiesforpeace.org for details). We are circulating a petition via email which, with the complete signers' list, will be delivered to our Honolulu City Council.

University of Iowa:
Campaign Against War at the University of Iowa:

The University of Iowa has given student activist groups access to a part of the Pentacrest Lawn for an antiwar, cultural, social, activist campout starting tomorrow. We have the spot reserved until the end of the semester if we need it that long. This continuous event is going to be huge. Every student organization that deals with some kind of activism on this campus has been contacted about participating. The purpose of the campout is a semi-permanent, central location for antiwar and activist activity on campus. It is going to be a simultaneous protest, rally, educational, and social event all in one. We have measures in place to ensure everyone's safety and health. A new group called Bodyguards of Social Justice, comprised of the nicest, cutest, toughest companeros y companeras in the city, will assist the University Campus Security in keeping us safe. The rest of the camp experience, having tons of fun while educating, teaching, and protesting, is up to us. Up to 50 students have already pledged to take shifts, many at night.
A complete teach-in schedule is available at: http://www.uiowa.edu/~c008171/robspage/peacecamp-teachin.html

Students for Peace, an organization at the University of Kansas, held an anti-war demonstration in conjunction with the nation-wide protest against the war with Iraq. Holding signs reading "Drop Bush not Bombs" and "I apologize for America," University of Kansas students protested against a possible war with Iraq. Students assembled near Wescoe Hall, chanting "President Bush, you can't hide. We don't want your genocide." Organizers had encouraged faculty, students and staff to walk out of classes and join the protest. Many of the students at the protest had been excused from their political rhetoric class to listen to the speeches. The event was co-sponsored by the National Student and Youth Peace Coalition and by The 180 Degrees Movement for Democracy and Education.

The Cost Of War Is Paid By The Poor - March from Baltimore to Washington D.C.
We call on you to walk with us from Baltimore to Washington DC from April 11 to April 13. We walk in solidarity with terrified and dying Iraqi children, mothers and fathers. We walk in solidarity with Americans needlessly dying for a war they did not choose. We know that poor and working class people will pay far more than $75 billion for this war. We walk in solidarity with the hungry whose food stamps are being cut, the veterans whose healthcare is slashed, with the students of under-funded schools, with pensioners losing benefits and with single mothers losing childcare. Our youth are risking their lives while the rich and powerful watch and speculate on military and corporate stocks from their boardrooms and bunkers.
The march will leave from Baltimore on the morning of Friday, April 11, and arrive in Washington D.C. on Sunday April 13, where thousands will be gathering to protest the violence of global poverty at the annual IMF/World Bank meetings. JOIN US! Participate for any portion or for the full distance.
We plan on walking approximately 15 miles per day mostly on Route 1, which runs through Laurel and College Park. We will pass near arms manufacturer Lockheed Martin, the National Security Agency, and the Johns Hopkins Applied Physics Laboratory to register our symbolic protest against these pillars of the war machine.

Come to a planning meeting on Thursday April 3 at 7:30pm at the Progressive Action Center in Baltimore (1443 Gorsuch Ave, at Kirk Ave.).

  Dearborn University of Michigan-Dearborn:
UMI-dearborn had a referendum on an anti-war resolution, which later passed. The Student Government at our school was unsure about the student body's opinion on the war, so they planned a student referendum on the actual resolution (the resolution was presented at several booths all over campus, and students had the choice to vote "Yes" or "No" on the resolution itself) and they also organized a town hall meeting. At the town hall, the proportion of students who supported the resolution vs those against it was like 25 to 1. And a similar proportion came out in the student referendum (around 20 yes votes to every no vote).

  Helena

Helena Peace Seekers Action Alert:
April 11, 4 pm:
HPS Vigil for Peace and Justice.
Theme for April 11: “Anti-War” does not equal “Anti-Soldier".
The theme “Anti-War does not equal Anti-Soldier” was chosen to highlight the fact that the Bush rally cry "Support Our Troops" seems to be a ploy to get people to "Support the War" – while the two ideas are clearly and fundamentally distinct. Be part of our Vigil For Peace And Justice in Helena. Since recent weeks have seen some harassment of peace and justice demonstrators at 11th and Montana, we do NOT recommend bringing young children this week.

We will continue our weekly Friday demonstrations -- Dec 13, 20, 27, Jan 3, 10, 16, 21, 24, 31, Feb 7, 14, 21, 28, Mar 7, 14, 20, 21 -- to stand up for peace and against the US invasion of Iraq and do it visibly in the Helena community. (Please do not park in the Osco Drug parking lot.)

Priority One:
A freshman at the University of Montana, I am now the coordinator for a fledgling WMD-awareness organization called Priority One (you can check out our web at: www.priorityoneonline.org). We use concerts to encourage people, especially college students, to take a good hard look at the current issues surrounding nuclear weapons/WMD and take action to prevent further use and spread. Our kickoff concert in Missoula this last October was a huge success, as we packed hundreds into our campus ballroom. Our goal now is to make Priority One grow into a nationwide network of campus chapters.

Women in Black are mourning the victims of violence in silent vigils worldwide. Women in Black is an international network of women protesting war. They share a common philosophy of opposition to militarism and violence and use a similar style of silent demonstration. The first Women in Black protests began in Israel in 1988 to mobilize sentiment for peace with Palestinians. The vigils have become a silent worldwide movement. Their silence also underscores women's historic voicelessness.

Works On Shirts Call to Action: WEARNICA - An International Day of Artistic Resistance to War: MAY 3
On February 5th, Colin Powell stood before the U. N. to make his case for a new resolution authorizing the U.S. to take military action against Iraq. Notably absent was Picasso's "Guernica", (pronounced WARE-nee-ka) perhaps one of the this century's greatest, most unsettling artistic images depicting the horrors of war. Under pressure from the U.S. Government, the tapestry was covered prior to the Secretary of State's speech out of concern that the painting's message might speak to historical parallels that theBush administration and UN officials were clearly determined that the media or the public should not make. On May 3rd, 2003, The Works on Shirts Project will be staging "WEARNICA", an international exhibition of artistic reactions to war, mounted on the backs of white cotton dress shirts and worn into cultural, commercial and governmental locations around the globe to raise public awareness of the realities of war in our time. With your help, we can send a message to the Bush administration and the world that the power of art to reveal the horrors of war and the promise of peace cannot be covered up. We need artists, organizers and volunteers to make this event a success.

Student Senate recently passed a pro-peace resolution passed by both the undergraduate and graduate student senate. The pro-peace angle was more effective than an anti-war one. The undergraduate senate debated a few points, mostly whether we as students had the right to take up this matter. Finally it passed with a large majority. A group of about 40 students filled the student senate meeting and we were congratulated on showing such dedication by several senators. The Graduate student senate did not debate over the appropriateness of the resolution. instead they debated over what more they could do as an organization to make it "more than just a piece of paper."

The Ohio State University Undergraduate Student Government Senate Passes Anti-War Resolution:
On Feb. 19th the Ohio State University's Undergraduate Student Government Senate (representing some 48,000 students) passed a resolution calling for a peaceful solution to the conflict with Iraq, and condemning an unprovoked attack on Baghdad and the Iraqi people. Following a flood of phone calls and e-mails from students supporting the resolution, the primary sponsor of the resolution, Senator Dan Ramos, reintroduced a revised version of a previous anti-war resolution and again asked the USG Senate to consider the proposal. Following the lengthy dialogue, the USG Senate voted to pass the resolution with 12 senators in favor, four opposed, and four abstaining. Text of the approved resolution 35-R-30, entitled "USG Stands Against Unprovoked War With Iraq," is available upon request:
